The São José was brimming with a cargo of royal treasure on its way to India to fuel trade in Portugal's spice colonies. Consisting of hand-struck 4 and 8 Reale Cobs, her cargo is unique for a treasure ship in that coins struck in the Old World and the New World were found together. Coins from Spain, Mexico, and Peru are represented.
In 1622 the Portuguese treasure ship São José, whose captain was Fracisco Da Gama, grandson of the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama, was en route to India with a cargo of silver 4 and 8 Reales "Cob" coins struck in Old and New World Mints. She was captured by the British and Dutch, but before her cargo could be removed, she sank to the bottom of the sea. Recovered in 2005, these unique 4 and 8 Reales "Cob" coins have been conserved and are certified by NGC. Fewer than 7,200 coins were recovered in collectible grades, and with worldwide interest in treasure coins on the upswing, we suggest you act fast to obtain your São José treasure coins before our limited stock is depleted! Similar "Cob" coins have sold for several thousands of dollars each, but we are able to offer these fascinating historic artifacts and a remarkably low price!
